Lost on Roman Streets

We’ve walked these streets before.
Or was it another ancient empire. It’s hard to tell
once things fall apart. The marble cannot hold
when subsequent powers strip
search colossal to spit-
shine temples of their own.
Rome that was spread out to
plunder others for her grandeur.
Rome that is has been pilfered and pillaged
more than anywhere else.
We explore streets walked for two thousand years
by Rome and her conquerors, but
it all feels familiar. We climb ladders
through layers of history,
churches over churches over temples
built on the ruins of tiny brick houses.
In this lifetime or the last,
one of them at least,
these eyes have seen these sights.
